Blackpool's bright lights, or Lytham's quiet charm

Lancashire's seaside offers two very different first dates. Blackpool is loud, cheeky and lit up, especially when the Illuminations are on in autumn. It's a place where nobody takes anything too seriously, which suits a casual meet perfectly. A few miles south, Lytham's green, its windmill and the quieter bars along Clifton Street feel like another world, ideal if you'd rather talk than shout. Morecambe's restored promenade and its views across the bay to the Lakeland fells are the north of the county's answer.

Inland, the Ribble Valley makes a gentle alternative. Clitheroe's castle and high street, the riverside walk at Ribchester and the country pubs scattered through the Forest of Bowland are all within half an hour of Preston, and quiet enough on a weekday that you can talk without being overheard.

The crossroads of the North West

Preston sits on the West Coast Main Line, so Lancaster is about fifteen minutes north, Manchester and Liverpool under an hour, and Glasgow a straight run up the line. Local trains reach Blackpool North, Blackburn, Burnley and Chorley. With members spread across so many towns, good connections make a big difference, and your daily matches take distance into account.
