Let the Metrolink do the driving

  1. The yellow trams reach Altrincham, Bury, East Didsbury, Eccles, Ashton, Rochdale, the Airport and the Trafford Centre, so most of the conurbation is one line from St Peter's Square.

The upside of the weather is that nobody here bats an eyelid at a date spent tucked in a warm pub corner rather than strolling a park, and a downpour is as good an excuse as any to sit closer. Ancoats' converted mills hide snug little places, and the Arndale and the Corn Exchange give you somewhere dry to meet before you choose where to go. If the sun does show, the Quays and the walk along the Irwell are worth grabbing while you can.
