Most of the county is a Metro ride away

Tyne and Wear is wonderfully joined up. The yellow Metro trains run out from Newcastle Central and Monument to Whitley Bay and Tynemouth on the coast, down to South Shields, across the river to Gateshead, and on to Sunderland. The airport has its own stop. From Jesmond to Jarrow, most of the county can meet in the middle within half an hour, and the little Shields Ferry across the river mouth is a fun way to arrive.

Newcastle leads the member data, and Gateshead, Sunderland, Washington, Elswick, Pallion and Kenton all appear. Gateshead, just over the bridges, is home to more of the area's women members than Newcastle itself, so for Tyne and Wear casual dating, don't stop at the river.

Shares of Casual.uk members in Tyne and Wear, across every section, from member records, October 2026.

Nearly half of our Tyne and Wear members are 35 to 44, a bigger share for that one decade than in any other area we cover. More than one in five are under 25, so there's a young crowd too, and very few are past 55. Fewer than one in six are women, and most members here are on this main site rather than Naughty. For something a bit cheekier, the Naughty section has more women overall.

Where to start the night

Quayside, valley or Jesmond

Newcastle has a famously big night out. These spots let you enjoy it at your own pace, and end it wherever you like.

The Quayside

Bars and restaurants under the Tyne Bridge, with the Millennium Bridge and the Baltic across the water for a walk.

Ouseburn Valley

Old pubs, music venues and a city farm tucked in a green valley east of the centre. Relaxed and a little bohemian.

Jesmond

Osborne Road's bars for a lively start, or Jesmond Dene's wooded paths for a quieter one.

Grey Street and the Grainger Market

Handsome stone streets in the centre of town, with old pubs and cafés close by.

Fish and chips on Longsands, and maybe a kiss

Locals know the best first dates in Tyne and Wear are often at the coast. Tynemouth has the priory on the headland, Longsands beach below it and Front Street's pubs and cafés for afterwards. Cullercoats and Whitley Bay are a short walk north along the cliffs. South of the river, South Shields and Roker in Sunderland have long seafronts of their own. Even in winter, a blustery walk followed by a warm pub is hard to beat.

If you're further out, Hexham and the Tyne Valley villages are a short train ride west on the line to Carlisle, with riverside walks and old market-town pubs that feel a long way from the Toon.

A Geordie first date, done right

  1. Pick a midweek evening if you want to hear each other. The Bigg Market on a Saturday is a different beast.
  2. Check the last Metro, which runs until around midnight.
  3. Meet in public and tell a mate where you'll be. If you'd like to see who you're meeting first, suggest a quick video call before you go.
