Casual Dating Rules: Keep It Light and Kind

Seven unwritten rules that stop no-strings fun from getting tangled.

The one rule underneath all the others: be honest

The core rules of casual dating are simple: be clear about what you want from the start, never assume exclusivity unless you've agreed it, treat consent and sexual health as non-negotiable, keep each other's secrets, and end it kindly. Almost every casual arrangement that goes wrong breaks one of those. Get them right and casual sex and dating are about as uncomplicated as adult life gets.

None of this is about rigid dos and don'ts. It's the shared etiquette that lets two people enjoy each other, in bed and out of it, without anyone feeling used or confused.

Should you say you want something casual straight away?

Yes, and earlier than feels natural. A line in your profile and a quick confirmation before you meet saves everyone time. The worst casual dating stories start with one person quietly hoping for more while the other assumed it was obvious. On Casual.uk you set what you're looking for on your profile and your daily matches take it into account, which does half the work for you. Be specific where it matters: a one-off, something regular, or seeing where the chemistry goes. If the words still feel awkward, our guide to asking for something casual has openers you can borrow.

Is it OK to see other people when dating casually?

Usually, yes. Non-exclusive is the default for most casual daters. But a default isn't an agreement, so if it matters to either of you, talk about it. Some people are happy to know nothing; others want to be told if there's someone new, especially when you're sleeping together. Neither is wrong. What causes hurt is finding out later that you had different assumptions.

Casual never means anything goes. Consent is a yes for this moment, with this person, and it can change halfway through an evening. Ask, listen and stop the second someone hesitates. Agreeing to meet, or having slept together last week, is not consent for tonight.

Look after sexual health as part of the fun rather than an afterthought. Bring condoms, use them, and get tested regularly if you have more than one partner. NHS sexual health clinics are free and confidential across the UK, and many areas will post you a free home testing kit. Raising it before things heat up is a sign of respect, and most people find it a relief when someone else goes first.

How discreet should a casual arrangement be?

Treat what you share as private unless you both agree otherwise. Don't screenshot messages, tag each other on social media or turn up unannounced at work. People have all sorts of reasons for keeping their sex life separate from friends, family or colleagues, and you don't need to know what they are. The site helps here: you go by a username, other members only see your nearest town, and nothing goes on your profile unless you put it there. Our safety page covers the rest.

What if one of you starts catching feelings?

It happens, and it's nobody's fault. The rule is to say so rather than letting it leak out as jealousy or sulking. Something like "I've realised I'd like more than this. No pressure, but I wanted to be straight with you" lets the other person answer honestly. If they want to keep it casual, you can decide whether that still works for you. Pretending you feel nothing to keep things going rarely ends well.

How do you end a casual thing kindly?

Send a message. Ghosting someone you've been sleeping with is the one thing almost everyone agrees is poor form, even in the most casual setup. Keep it short and warm: "I've really enjoyed our time, but I'm going to call it a day. Take care of yourself." No essay, no list of reasons, no door left half open if you don't mean it. If someone reacts badly or keeps messaging after a clear goodbye, the block button is there for exactly that.

Casual etiquette, settled

How often should you text someone you are dating casually?

Whatever suits you both. Many casual daters message mainly to plan the next meet, with some flirting in between. Daily good-morning texts tend to signal something more serious.

Is it OK to stay over after a casual date?

If you're both happy with it, yes. Ask rather than assume, and don't read too much into either answer.

Should you introduce a casual partner to friends?

Generally not without asking first. Bringing someone into your social circle shifts the arrangement, and plenty of people prefer to keep casual dating private.

Is ghosting acceptable in casual dating?

After one chat, drifting off is common. Once you've met, a short goodbye message is the decent thing. The exception is anyone who makes you feel unsafe: block and report them.
