Casual.uk vs Tinder: Skip Straight to Casual

The swipe app everybody has heard of, and a British site built for flirting and no-strings fun.

One app for everything, one site for fun

Tinder, launched in 2012 and owned by Match Group, is the swipe app people use for anything from a drink to a long relationship; its own pitch covers something serious, something casual and something you haven't figured out yet. Casual.uk, online since 2014, is a British casual dating site made for flirting, one-off nights and regular no-strings arrangements. Tinder offers sheer numbers. Casual.uk offers a place where wanting something casual is the starting point rather than a risky thing to admit.

Lots of people keep both. The useful question is where your evenings are better spent, and that depends on how much sorting you're happy to do yourself before anyone gets as far as a drink.

A site where casual is the whole point

Tinder's pull is scale. It says it's available in 190 countries, and open it in Leeds or Bristol on a Friday night and the stack seems to go on for ever. That breadth also means your next match might want a weekend away and a meeting with their parents. Plenty of people write "nothing serious" in a bio and still get asked where this is going by the third message.

On Casual.uk that question is settled before anyone says hello, because the site exists for casual dating. It has more than 2,000 members across its five sections, almost all British, and on the main site most are 25 to 54, with London home to the most by a distance. If you want a particular crowd, there are sections with members of their own: Naughty for raunchier fun, Mature for over-40s, MILF for confident older women and their admirers, and BBW for curves. Our page on no-strings dating explains the spirit of the place.

Matches picked for chemistry, not thumb speed

Tinder works on the swipe: right for yes, left for no, and a chat opens when both of you said yes. Profile prompts give a little more to go on, Gold shows who has already liked you, and since June 2025 there's a Double Date feature for dating alongside a friend. It's fast and fun, and it rewards a great first photo.

Casual.uk hands you a fresh set of daily matches instead, weighed on what each person is looking for, shared interests and lifestyle, distance and age. You can browse members yourself too, comment on someone's photo or status update in the members' feed to break the ice, and join in the polls. Badges earned through activity, Chatterbox, Heartthrob and Most Popular, show who's been busy on the site before you write. With VIP you can also rewind a profile you passed on, see everyone who likes you, and search by city, distance and what people are open to. The details are on our features page.

Keep your fun to yourself

Casual dating often comes with a wish for discretion, and nobody needs their boss or their ex stumbling across their profile. On Casual.uk strangers see only your username and nearest town, not your name, email or address, and the photos are your call, so a cheeky picture can wait until you know who's looking. If a chat turns sour, you can block anyone, and report anyone, straight from their profile or the conversation.

Because it runs in the browser, there's no dating app icon on your phone unless you decide to add the home-screen shortcut. Tinder, as a dedicated app, sits on the home screen like any other, though it has a web version too.

Flirt one to one, or in a crowd

On Tinder the conversation starts once you've matched, one to one. Casual.uk gives free members a limited number of messages every day, and replying to a VIP member never costs a thing. VIP takes the limit away and opens members-only chat rooms, plus private group chats of up to 50 people that free members can join too. That's handy if you'd rather warm up in a crowd before you go one to one, or you're arranging something with a few people at once and want it all in one place.

Whichever you use, a few habits keep the fun on your terms: stay on the app or site until you feel comfortable, video-call first if you want to be sure the face matches the photos, never send money to someone you haven't met, and make the first meet somewhere public. Our safety page has more tips for meeting up.

Pay for more, or pay nothing at all

Both are free to join. Tinder sells three subscriptions, Tinder Plus, Tinder Gold and Tinder Platinum, with extras such as Boosts and Super Likes on top. Prices move with the plan length and the offer of the moment, and the app shows the current figure.

On Casual.uk a free account covers your profile and photos, daily matches, the feed, polls and a limited number of messages a day. VIP opens unlimited messaging, advanced search, the chat rooms and group chats. VIP Plus puts you first in other people's daily matches, moves your messages and likes up the queue and opens exclusive matches; boosts and Super Match cost extra. Plans run from a week to a year: the shorter ones renew until you cancel, while a year is paid once and does not renew. The full list of prices sits on our pricing page.

A fair call

When Tinder suits you better

There are good reasons to stay on the big app.

Go with Tinder if

You're open to anything from a fling to a relationship, you love the quick swipe, you fancy a Double Date with a friend, or you're travelling and want a huge pool in any city. Since March 2026 new UK users also record Face Check, a short video selfie matched against their profile photos.

Go with Casual.uk if

You know you want something casual, you live in the UK and want people nearby, and you like daily matches weighed on what you're after, with chat rooms and group chats when you want company in numbers.

Tinder for hookups: straight answers

Is Tinder good for hookups in the UK?

It can be, because so many people use it, but intentions are mixed and you have to find the casual crowd yourself. A casual dating site such as Casual.uk starts from casual, so you can say what you're after in your first message without worrying it's too much.

Who owns Tinder?

Match Group. Tinder launched in 2012, and Casual.uk has no connection with it or with Match Group.

Is there a Tinder alternative just for casual dating?

Yes. Casual.uk is a British casual dating site, running since 2014, whose daily matches weigh what you want, how far away people are and their age, with separate Naughty, Mature, MILF and BBW sections. It runs in any browser, so there's nothing to download.

What are Tinder's paid tiers called?

Tinder Plus, Tinder Gold and Tinder Platinum, plus one-off Boosts and Super Likes. Gold, for example, shows you who has already liked you. Prices vary, so check the app for today's figure.
